Semin has no beef with Bykov

Semin walked into the hotel lobby wearing shorts and flip-flops, as if the world championship was being held in sunny Florida rather than in Quebec, where frozen mountains of snow are on the ground. "I can't go out on the streets dressed like this" explained Semin, "but I can walk the the hallways".

- "I flew here with Sasha Ovechkin"- says Semin. -"We reached Montreal, and in 30 minutes we were sitting on a plane to Quebec. We were almost late. There were a lot of people at customs, but they let us bypass the line".

 - Where is Ovechkin right now?

-As soon as he got here he went straight to bed. When he sleeps he wouldn't wake up if a gun went off."

- Do you have any doubts about whether it was worth it to come?

- No, I rested just fine after the playoffs. Nothing is going to interfere with my playing in the Championship.

- Vyacheslav Bykov said that he envisioned you, Ovechkin and Fedorov in a line.

- I know. I think that is because we sometimes played that line in Washington.

- But you and Ovechkin are both left wingers.

- This is my second season playing some on the left, and some on the right. Sometimes I even get my flanks mixed up when I come back up ice.

- Sergei Fedorov didn't fly up with you guys?

- No, from Washington he went home to Detroit. On Sunday at 8 in the evening he is planning to fly to Quebec.

- The issue of Ovechkin's insurance hasn't been resolved yet. How about you?

- I have the same problem. It's still up in the air. There is some problem with the paperwork--they've asked the club to send documents proving our insurance. I'm waiting for a call from my agent Mark Handler. He will be able to tell me whether or not I can play in the championship.

- And there is a possibility you might not be able to?

- I think everything is going to be worked out. It is not a question of money, but of paperwork. What's more, my insurance will be less than Ovechkin's. His contract with Washington is for 13 years, and mine is only for two.

- After last year's history of you being dropped from the team for tardiness, did your recent meeting with Bykov go okay?

- Yes. We are adults here and we all understand. What happened is in the past. If there was any type of problem remaining, I
wouldn't have come here.

- Could you see this happening: you and Ovechkin are late for the flight to Quebec, and you arrive late in the evening, and Bykov drops you both from the team for breaking team rules?

- Wellll...- Semin thinks for a moment. -I guess that is possible. But there are a lot of planes flying to Quebec. As you can see, we weren't late. We were the first to arrive. The team are the ones who haven't arrived at the hotel yet.

...Semin and Radulov flop on the couch and waited for the team to arrive from Trua-Rivier. After an hour the Russian team enters the hotel lobby.

Even the luggage has arrived by this time, which had been lost at the Frankfurt airport during a layover. Sergei Zinovev carries one of the bags.

...Some players go to their rooms, some go out in the town. Others go to dinner in the hotel restaurant. Fedorov arrives, and
our entire team is at full strength.
