Russian National team forward Alexander Ovechkin: We played like idiots at the end of the game
A correspondent for Soviet Sport talked with the two Alexes from Washington, Ovechkin and Semin, who between the two had three goals.
OVECHKIN: ITALY PLAYED IN DEFENSE MODE
- It was immediately apparent that the Italians were playing in defensive mode- noted Alexander Ovechkin. -We wanted to score sooner, and we were able to do so.
- In the beginning the national team was helped by your Washington line...
- And so? We played. We understand one another. It is true that at the end of the game we started to play like idiots. We could have done without that.
- For the majority of the time Kovalchuk played defender with you. But in Washington you yourself are usually in that spot.
- I think that the coach made the right decision. Ilya more often works the point-- the striking position of the defender.
-Other than the All Star game in Atlanta this year, have you ever before shared the ice with Kovalchuk?
-Never
-Have you ever been on the ice in a USSR team uniform?
-Also never. But you notice here is the symbol of Russia. Generally speaking we just wanted to pay tribute to our veterans who won the Olympics in 1956.
SEMIN: I COULD HAVE HAD A HAT TRICK
- We were in good spirits, the guys helped each other, they played well. -reported Alexander Semin, having been recognized by the game organizers as the first star of the game.
- Was it difficult to get adjusted to the Italians?
- No, not really, it was a typical game. Whether it is Italy or Canada, it really makes no difference to us. Generally, you can't get adjusted to different opponents. You might underestimate them.
