Varlamov is on Crutches

I gasped when I saw Varlamov before the game against Italy. Our goalkeeper was hobbling around on crutches, holding in his hand a stadium seat ticket for the game-- it was from there that he watched it. Semen looked helpless. It appears we have lost him the entire tournament.

-Tell me why I should be photographed looking like this? - Varlamov at first doesn't want to have his picture taken.

- Because the fans are worried about you. They want to know how you are doing.

-Yeah, everything is okay with me, don't worry, - as Semen gives a Hollywood smile.

- You don't hop around on crutches when everything is okay. Tell me, how did you manage to get hurt?

-On Wednesday we were doing sprints in the gym, and I made a bad move and landed wrong on my foot. I damaged my ankle ligament. That is why I am going around on crutches.

- Have you had injuries like this before?

-This is a trauma for me also. Its just nonsense- Varlamov bravely says.

- How long will you be unable to play? At first we figured that it would be a week...

-I absolutely don't know anything. It would be better to ask where will I fit in.

I help Semen get into his stadium seat. After a few minutes Nikolai Kulemin and his agent Gary Greenstein sit down beside him. The Magnit forward, who was cut from the team, has not yet left Canada. He went to Toronto to finish some business with the team there. Just last year Kulemin signed a two year contract with Toronto and intends to make it to the NHL next season.

...and after a few minutes we almost lost our second goalkeeper. On a break away the puck hit Yeremenko in the head. If Sasha had received a serious injury, the goalkeeper situation for the team would have become breathtaking. But thank God it didn't come to pass.

-We are still consulting with the doctors on how serious Varlamov's injury is-- Bykov reported at a press conference after the game against Italy. It is possible that he may need to be sent to Moscow.

- If Nabokov doesn't become available from San Jose, will you bring a third goalkeeper from Russia?

- We haven't excluded that possibility.
