Where Has Fedor Fedorov Gone?

The arrival in Washington of the New Jersey Devils reopened a fairly recent wound. Fedor Fedorov, brother of former Washington forward Sergei (former forward in the sense that nowadays Sergei is defending), played in New Jersey during the preseason but didn't make the team. In an interview with SE, Fedor said that there was no way he would go to the AHL, since he had already done his time there, and was thinking of playing in Russia. But time has passed and nobody has seen Fedor yet in Russia, and he has even dropped out of sight in America. What can be said, when even your brother doesn't know what is going on?

"Honestly, I don't know where he is right now" Sergei admitted after the game. "The last time I talked with him was three days ago. I know that he is still in the states, but he didn't want to talk about his plans. That is his business."

If he is still in the states, that means there may be a chance he will be picked up by some other NHL team. That surely seems to be the logical conclusion. So what exactly happened in New Jersey with Fedor? After all, Devil's GM Lou Lamorello personally invited him and wanted very much for the Russian to come onto the team... I tried to get an answer to this question directly from Lou, but the careful functionary wouldn't clarify the situation.

"I don't discuss contracts" said Lamorello during a period break. "I can say that we don't have a contract with him. The player has been released and the agreement has been annulled. I don't know where he is now."

I was able to get some information from the head Devil's specialist Rich Chere, hockey reporter for the New Jersey Star Ledger.

"Fedorov was given every chance to prove himself" said Chere. "But it wasn't good enough. It didn't help that he didn't hit it off with coach Brian Sutter. He has a heavy emphasis on defense, and Fedorov was really weak in that aspect. In general, I would say that he did not impress. He was given a lot of ice time during the preseason, but Fedor just didn't produce. Sutter wanted to send him down to the AHL, but from the very beginning Fedor said that there was no way he would play there, so the coach told Lamorello that he needed to release him."

It's a sad story. On the other hand, it's not desirable to think of Fedor playing Devil's defensive hockey. We can only wait and see how his quest ends.
