10 April 2008-The Playoffs are just around the corner More…

In a recent interview while in Beijing for the Olympics, Alex Ovechkin  mentioned his friendship with Andrei Kirilenko, NBA star and captain of the men's basketball team. He said he first met Andrei a few years back when they were both on a Russian game show and Andrei was their team captain. Being the OV trivia nut that I am, I just had to find out more about this game show appearance. I started digging through obscure Russian web sites (not for the faint of heart), and it was while searching for information on this gameshow that I ran across the infamous "OV is looking for a bride" videoclip from yet another wacky TV appearance in Russia.  I didn't stop looking for the original show, however, and dogged persistence finally paid off. I present you now with video proof of Ovechkin's appearance on the ultimate freaky game show.

In 2006, Ovechkin participated in a game show called "Bolshie Gonki" which translates into "The Great Race". According to TV1, the Russian channel which produces the program, the game show originated in France in 1962 and has been very popular in Europe ever since. The show has teams from various countries competing in physically challenging but extremely  silly events. Russia first participated in the show in 2005, and has made a point of including some of their top athletes on the national team, especially for the season finale.

These episodes you are about to see were originally aired in December, 2006. These were the semi-finals and the grand finale for the season.

NOTE: Due to the nature of these clips, a word-for-word translation is not necessary, nor really possible. I have provided subtitles to explain what is going on and to make any salient points.

One of the first games OV participated in was "Speed Dressing". He had to hang from a bar over a long moving platform while another teammate dressed him in a hat, shirt and pants---well just watch the video, you'll get the idea.

(It should be noted that the girl in the interesting position with OV while trying to dress him is a singer with the band "Блестящие" ("Blestyashchie"--meaning "the shiny ones"). Apparently this is when he met up with them for the first time, and is currently rumored to be romantically involved with one of the singers.)

OV participated in a lot of other interesting games, and shows some great athletic ability in avoiding the water in the "Gong" Game

However, his balance doesn't look too good as Romeo. You do have to admit that he manhandles his Juliet just fine.

OV got wet several times, and in this clip does his best imitation of a shark. Note: don't make the shark mad with a restart. He doesn't seem to like restarts.

And finally, my personal favorite-- OV the wolf having his way with a poor defenseless Italian bunny.
