12/29/2008 Slava Malamud’s Entire Ovechkin Interview

Monday, December 29th, 2008
As promised in my post this morning, here is the entire interview which Slava Malamud recently conducted with Alex Ovechkin. I apologize for the delay, but this was actually quite a long article, and I’m on holiday right now in the middle of BFE, or the closest thing to it in South-West Virginia. Anyway, enjoy and as always I welcome your feedback and comments.

Alexander Ovechkin: “Code Word: Glass”

In the past year Alex Ovechkin became the top goal scorer and points leader in the NHL, and as result was recognized as the most valuable player of the league for the 2007/2008 season. Could you imagine our Christmas edition without an interview with him? Of course not! So our own correspondent for SE in North America met up with the well known hockey player.

“Again With The Fast Driving”

The open parking deck at the Washington Capitals training complex in Arlington reverberates with the roar of a car engine. It is a healthy roar, indicating that a car is coming up the ramp at a speed that is significantly higher than what is even theoretically allowed. It can only be Him– Alexander the Great in his white ride. Who else would go so rushing in such a tight parking lot, as if speeding into the opponent’s zone two-on-one? (more…)

12/29/2008 Slava Malamud’s Interview With Ovechkin in WaPo

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Kudos to Slava Malamud, reporter for the Russian newspaper Sport-Express, on his new beat– guest blogger for Tarik El-Bashir in the Washington Post. I’m currently working on the translation of the rest of the interview, and if another blogger doesn’t beat me to it, I’ll have it up later today.

Alexander Ovechkin: “Fans Are Already Trading Me”

After Saturday’s game against the Rangers, the main Russian star of the NHL gave an interview to Sport-Express

There is no end to Ovechkin’s bad luck! In the Rangers game, he was credited with a deflection for the first goal, but after video review it was taken away. However, the fifth-ranked goal scorer on the team did not appear to be too awfully worried after the game. He explained that it was fruitless to get worried. (more…)

The Dzagoev Dialectic

When we say that is impossible to understand Russia with your head (or any other part of your body, or through the hypostases of human nature or household goods), we are not, of course, talking about foreigners but about ourselves. We already know that foreigners don’t understand us. We also know (although we try to convince ourselves otherwise) that it is boring for them to try and understand us. In the mind of most westerners, Russia is on the same level as their living room ceiling. Yes, they know it exists and yes, it is quite large, but until it starts leaking it is not in their line of sight and they don’t pay much attention to it. Every now and then it can even be rather difficult for us to understand ourselves. The entirety of our classical literature was born from these agonizing pangs of self understanding, and those of you who remember just how forcefully our schoolteachers pounded that stuff into our heads cannot help but agree. Where Has Fedor Fedorov Gone?

The arrival in Washington of the New Jersey Devils reopened a fairly recent wound. Fedor Fedorov, brother of former Washington forward Sergei (former forward in the sense that nowadays Sergei is defending), played in New Jersey during the preseason but didn’t make the team. In an interview with SE, Fedor said that there was no way he would go to the AHL, since he had already done his time there, and was thinking of playing in Russia. But time has passed and nobody has seen Fedor yet in Russia, and he has even dropped out of sight in America. What can be said, when even your brother doesn’t know what is going on? (more…)

Alexander Ovechkin: “I’m Not Panicking”

After the game against New Jersey, Washington Forward Alexander Ovechkin praised his teammate Alexander Semin on his double.

“Everybody has their moments” said Ovechkin after the game “but some people make better use of them than others. Attaboy, Sema! You’ve grabbed the courage. The main thing right now is to make points for the team, and not be worried about who is getting how many goals.” (more…)

Alexander Semin: “Me? Superstar? Well Why Not”

In yesterday’s game against New Jersey, Washington forward Alexander Semin scored two goals against legendary goalie Martin Brodeur and with his 10th point became the number one rated bombardier in the NHL. The game hero was one of the last to leave the dressing room. He said that he was sitting in the Jacuzzi, which generally perks him up. Good thing, since it might be dangerous for his health if he got any more relaxed. There probably hasn’t been a calmer player in Washington’s history. (more…)
